Collector's Items

This blog is my virtual scrapbook.
I try to give credits, link back and reference sources in all of my posts.
Please do not remove them, as I don't own any of these pictures, even if I altered them. Thanks.

More variations on Shakespeare’s Ariel. Even a female version!

On top: Henry Singleton 1819 / left: Ariel in An Illustrated Shakespeare Birthday Book 1883, right: by Henry Fuseli, c. 1800-10 /  Helen Jacobs (1888-1970) /  Louis Rhead, early 20th century /  George Cruikshank (1792-1878) / Tobacco Advertising?

Joseph Severn’s “Ariel Riding On a Bat” (1830) portrays Ariel from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. It was certainly the inspiration for these antique cameos.

Street style 1906: Edward Linley Sambourne’s fashion blog. That woman’s posture - her reading while walking - looks so contemporary, she could as well be staring at her smartphone…

Ripper Street’s episode#2 starts with the murder of a toy maker in 1889. The very first scene features one of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre’s miniatures! I’ve written about them before.

I have never quite understood collectors of antique postcards, they’ve always seemed a little odd to me. But since I found the About Postcards page I can see how you can become crazy over all these beautiful items…Some of the nicest illustrators I could find are Ethel Parkinson (picture 1 from eBay) / Thomas Maybank (2 from eBay) / Millicent Sowerby (3 from eBay) / Willebeek Le Mair (4 from eBay) / Rie Cramer / Hilda Miller / Sybil Barham / and of course Ida Outhwaite

Update: German & Austrian artists: Josefine Allmayer / Pauli Ebner / Liesel Lauterborn / Elsa Beskow / Gertrud Caspari

“John Atkinson Grimshaw (6 September 1836 – 13 October 1893) was a Victorian-era artist, a “remarkable and imaginative painter” known for his city night-scenes and landscapes. (Wikipedia)”
I discovered this artist via an article on the Telegraph: £100 Victorian oil painting sells for £185,000 at auction. Et voilà: he also painted spirits/fairies and is therefore regarded as an influence (amongst many others) on Disney.

One of the most awesome auctions on ebay I have ever won - a shadowbox, supposedly from around 1860-1880. Can’t wait to get it…

One of the weirdest and most beautiful pieces of that kind of jewelry I have ever seen. Usually, jewelry with real insects/beetles from that era (The Egyptian Revival) looks more like this. Now on ebay. Update: Sold for $279,99.
