Rebus: A representation of words in the form of pictures or symbols, often presented as a puzzle. German: Bilderrätsel

Rebus charms seem to have been most popular around 1900. The majority of them were German or French. They are pretty rare, prices range from c. $30.00 to c. $400.00.

A CORAL, ENAMEL, CHALCEDONY AND DIAMOND BROOCH - Bentley & Skinner  An angel skin coral, enamel, chalcedony and diamond-set brooch after Julien Duval comprising a carved angel skin coral putti with rose diamond-set silver wings riding upon the back of a firefly with a carved pale green translucent chalcedony body, gold legs and irridecent enamelled gold wings, harnessed with twisted gold wire reins, measuring approximately 4cms x 3.5cms, in fitted, shaped leather presentation case with tooled gilt decoration and bevelled glass front, gross weight 8.5 grams. This is a hand crafted piece, after Duval, made by Bentley & Skinner. Price: £19,500.00 Found through Dragonflies, a board on pinterest.

More butterfly wing pictures with fairies that made bidders on ebay go crazy: On top: sold for £300.00, second sold for £330.00. The third is definitely my favorite, painted by Dorothea Buckley, measuring 16 x 9 inches (41 x 23 cms), because of the huge crack in the glass it sold for only £48.00.

British Nelson Period Micro Ivory Ship Garnet Ring Circa 1790, extremely rare survival of micro ivory rings. Set under crystal on hand painted waves with garnets surround. Similar ring can be found in The British Museum in London. Most likely English in origin although ivory hand carvings were done in Germany, France, and Switzerland in the late 18th century. Approximate 7.75 ring size. Can be sized. $12,000.00 More beautiful rings can be found on Bell and Bird.

Circa 1790, extremely rare survival of micro ivory rings. Set under crystal on hand painted waves with garnets surround. Similar ring can be found in The British Museum in London. For collectors, these are the stars amongst butterfly pictures. The fairies. They’re pretty rare and therefore strongly sought after. When I started doing research on this kind of art I really thought that £188,- were quite expensive for this. That was before I watched a battle for an even smaller picture on ebay that ended with £360,- and another with £391,- shortly after.  Market Hill Antiques sold two fairy pictures for £595,-. A similar fairy with foil instead of wings went up to £102,-. I still have to find out when exactly they have been produced, some claim to be “victorian”, some art deco.  They have all been made in England and are mostly handpainted. Motifs are very often ladies in crinolines, ships, chinese and dutch scenes. Amongst the nicer ones (in my opinion) are those that feature children’s books illustrations (or kind of), and landscapes. These pictures, due to the wings they include, are quite small and prices now range from around £20,- to…wait and see. These whimsical celluloid Popeye brooches seem to be pretty rare. I found one on ebay by chance, then got curious and tried to find out more of & about them. They all vary a tiny bit from each other, it looks as if they have been handsawn and -painted! I think these pieces may have been made around the 40’s (maybe even earlier) in Europe, as most of them are sold from there and they are most likely unauthorized versions of Popeye. I couldn’t find out what happened to the one’s right foot - it is too absurd.
