More butterfly wing pictures with fairies that made bidders on ebay go crazy: On top: sold for £300.00, second sold for £330.00. The third is definitely my favorite, painted by Dorothea Buckley, measuring 16 x 9 inches (41 x 23 cms), because of the huge crack in the glass it sold for only £48.00.

Illustrator Richard Doyle (September 1824 – 11 December 1883). His work appeared also in Punch magazine, just like Edward Linley Sambourne’s.
He illustrated a string of fantasy titles, amongst them: The Enchanted Doll by Mark Lemon (1849). That’s where Marina Bychkova got her website title from?! Plus: He was the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!!

I have never quite understood collectors of antique postcards, they’ve always seemed a little odd to me. But since I found the About Postcards page I can see how you can become crazy over all these beautiful items…Some of the nicest illustrators I could find are Ethel Parkinson (picture 1 from eBay) / Thomas Maybank (2 from eBay) / Millicent Sowerby (3 from eBay) / Willebeek Le Mair (4 from eBay) / Rie Cramer / Hilda Miller / Sybil Barham / and of course Ida Outhwaite

The illustrations of Ida Bohatta (*1900; †1992) have accompanied me during elementary school. Any time we did well we got stamps in our booklets. For 10 collected stamps we got a little illustrated card called “Fleisskärtchen”. I loved those cards. Pictured are her books on the four seasons, printed in 1941.

“Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888 - 1960) was an Australian illustrator of children’s books. Her work mostly depicted fairies. (…) Her illustrations were exhibited throughout Australia, as well as in London and Paris between 1907 and 1933.” Fairies were quite popular at that time (in 1911 “Peter and Wendy” by J. M. Barrie was published as a novel), even Queen Mary sent postcards with Ida’s illustrations to her friends. I guess Outhwaite and English coeval Cicely Mary Barker were a great influence on the fairy pictures I’ve posted here and here. And I wonder if Ida was referred to in the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries episode “Away with the fairies”.

Another pretty exciting fairy story of that time is that about the Cottingley Fairies’ photographs.

Two young cousins, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, caused a stirr in 1917, when they claimed to have made photographs of real fairies (which decades later were exposed as a hoax). Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was convinced of the veracity of the five pictures!
