This blog is my virtual scrapbook.
I try to give credits, link back and reference sources in all of my posts.
Please do not remove them, as I don't own any of these pictures, even if I altered them. Thanks.

More variations on Shakespeare’s Ariel. Even a female version!

On top: Henry Singleton 1819 / left: Ariel in An Illustrated Shakespeare Birthday Book 1883, right: by Henry Fuseli, c. 1800-10 /  Helen Jacobs (1888-1970) /  Louis Rhead, early 20th century /  George Cruikshank (1792-1878) / Tobacco Advertising?

Joseph Severn’s “Ariel Riding On a Bat” (1830) portrays Ariel from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. It was certainly the inspiration for these antique cameos.

Twin sisters Ekaterina and Elena Popovy create BJDs who’s costumes and accessories are strongly connected with fashion and thus go beyond the usual fairy tale/gothic art niche. The sisters, who look like dolls themselves, graduated in Yekaterinburg and started making dolls in 2004.
Their earlier dolls were quite different from the actual ones. I have to say that their style is quite similar to Marina Bychkova’s fantastic porcelain dolls, if not clearly copied. The furniture looks like it came alive from a Ray Caesar picture, also the dolls and their gestures remind me of Caesar. The fashion aspect makes them different though. There is a whole range of lingerie accessories and fetish shoes!!

Illustrator Richard Doyle (September 1824 – 11 December 1883). His work appeared also in Punch magazine, just like Edward Linley Sambourne’s.
He illustrated a string of fantasy titles, amongst them: The Enchanted Doll by Mark Lemon (1849). That’s where Marina Bychkova got her website title from?! Plus: He was the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!!

The Clock (2010) by Christian Marclay “…is in effect a clock, but it is made of a 24-hour montage of thousands of time-related scenes from movies and some TV shows, meticulously edited to be shown in “real time”: each scene contains an indication of time (for instance, a timepiece, or a piece of dialogue) that is synchronized to show the actual time. MEMENTO MORI – SKULL
Ivory, glazed
Design: Ignaz Günther, approx. 1756
height 4 cm · product no. 01.327 · price 239 €
“When Ignaz Günther designed his majestic Crucifix, presumably in 1756, at the foot of the cross, alongside the bones, there was also a skull. With its striking eye sockets and stylised form of the jaw, the four-centimetre-tall Skull is a great artefact. Four separate casts are required to produce this miniature in the master workshops – even the jaw has its own cast.
Today, this memento mori is among the most popular of the Manufactory’s products. It has also been available in black bisque porcelain since 2009.”

Description taken from Nymphenburg’s product sheet.
