Joseph Severn’s “Ariel Riding On a Bat” (1830) portrays Ariel from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. It was certainly the inspiration for these antique cameos.

One of the weirdest and most beautiful pieces of that kind of jewelry I have ever seen. Usually, jewelry with real insects/beetles from that era (The Egyptian Revival) looks more like this. Now on ebay. Update: Sold for $279,99.

These whimsical celluloid Popeye brooches seem to be pretty rare. I found one on ebay by chance, then got curious and tried to find out more of & about them. They all vary a tiny bit from each other, it looks as if they have been handsawn and -painted! I think these pieces may have been made around the 40’s (maybe even earlier) in Europe, as most of them are sold from there and they are most likely unauthorized versions of Popeye. I couldn’t find out what happened to the one’s right foot - it is too absurd.

More of these beautiful butterfly pendants. There are various versions of them, I couldn’t find out in which period of time they were popular. I guess somewhen between the late 1800s and 1930. I also couldn’t quite figure out what kind of fiber some of them contain - silk? Prices vary quite drastically, although I have to admit that some seem to be far better done and preserved than others.

Update: Some more info here, here and on Magpie’s Finds.
