Joseph Severn’s “Ariel Riding On a Bat” (1830) portrays Ariel from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. It was certainly the inspiration for these antique cameos.

Twin sisters Ekaterina and Elena Popovy create BJDs who’s costumes and accessories are strongly connected with fashion and thus go beyond the usual fairy tale/gothic art niche. The sisters, who look like dolls themselves, graduated in Yekaterinburg and started making dolls in 2004.

Their earlier dolls were quite different from the actual ones. I have to say that their style is quite similar to Marina Bychkova’s fantastic porcelain dolls, if not clearly copied. The furniture looks like it came alive from a Ray Caesar picture, also the dolls and their gestures remind me of Caesar. The fashion aspect makes them different though. There is a whole range of lingerie accessories and fetish shoes!!

An egg-shaped basket with interwoven blue silk ribbons hinges open to reveal a well-fitted interior of blue silk and lace edging, containing an all-bisque doll with painted features, blonde mohair wig, peg-jointed limbs, painted shoes and socks, wearing beautiful long original lace Christening gown and bonnet, along with an assortment of original accessories including rattles, pacifier, puff, brush, bib, and more. Excellent condition. For the French market, circa 1890, rare and beautifully-preserved arrangement. Sold for $1,300.00

A CORAL, ENAMEL, CHALCEDONY AND DIAMOND BROOCH - Bentley & Skinner

An angel skin coral, enamel, chalcedony and diamond-set brooch after Julien Duval comprising a carved angel skin coral putti with rose diamond-set silver wings riding upon the back of a firefly with a carved pale green translucent chalcedony body, gold legs and irridecent enamelled gold wings, harnessed with twisted gold wire reins, measuring approximately 4cms x 3.5cms, in fitted, shaped leather presentation case with tooled gilt decoration and bevelled glass front, gross weight 8.5 grams. This is a hand crafted piece, after Duval, made by Bentley & Skinner.
